Eligibility Requirements for Studying in USA

Admission requirements vary widely depending on the university in USA. Proof of strong proficiency in English is required by all universities in USA. Students may be required to provide proof of language proficiency by writing a language proficiency test (E.g. IELTS or TOEFL)

Given below is a brief overview of the basic requirements for different programs available for studying in USA

Undergraduate Program

For undergraduate programs, a minimum of twelve years of education (Equivalent to completion of 12th Std. in India) is required

Postgraduate Program

For graduate level programs, you should have completed a degree in your chosen field of interest

Postgraduate Management Program (MBA)

Graduate Management Aptitude Test (GMAT) is required by most of the business schools in USA for the MBA aspirants. The test assesses the verbal, analytical and mathematical skills of the candidate. A score of 600 and above is considered competitive.

Along with your degree credentials, you will also typically need to provide:

  • Two or more letters of recommendation/Reference Letters

  • A graduate admissions test result for graduate students (e.g. GRE/GMAT)

  • For Undergraduate students,  SAT or ACT may be required

  • Proof of proficiency in English (e.g. TOEFL/IELTS) if your first language is not English

  • A statement of purpose (essay), outlining your aspirations and demonstrating your suitability for the course/program of study

  • A research proposal (for PhD and postdoctoral applicants)

The first step in the admission process is to determine your program of study (e.g. Electrical Engineering, Computer science, Biotechnology, Law, Medicine etc.) and the universities that offer these programs.
